"Each day holds a surprise. But only if we expect it can we see, hear or feel it when it comes to us. Let's not be afraid to receive each day's surprise; weather it comes to us as sorrow or as joy it will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared humainty."
Henri Nouwen

There's the hint of a reflection in this Paris café window
on a beautiful, sunny day in 1994.
This city was our home for twelve years.
Other than stateside grandparent visits,
all of my babies' childhood memories live here.

My heart aches for Paris.
For all of those who know the terror that comes
when the sanctity and security of the place they call home
is shattered.

I'm so grateful for our cherished, Parisian memories.
For family and friends and all who will get an extra hug this week.
And I mourn with those who can no longer hug their own.

"La reconnaissance est la mémoire du coeur."
Jean-Baptiste Massieu

"We all live under the same sky,
but we don't all have the same horizon."
Konrad Adenaur

Of late,
I find that when my horizon seems
dull,
diminished
or dreary,
a walk out my front door with my camera
adjusts my perspective.
Whether it's the leaf holding raindrops on the hood of our car,
or the rain saturated leaf that's fallen to rest on our deck,
focusing on the simplest of details
reminds me of the wealth of beauty that
truly
is all around me.
